From flat, blunt dark carmine flower buttons, a pleated white skirt of a flower bursts forth, each layered petal streaked with carmine at the edge, as if touched with a brush. The contrast between the button and the white flower is characteristic of this rose. The flowers are medium sized and filled with very many small petals fanning outwards and arranged around a central button eye. They have a good scent and are in clusters of 3 to 7. The shrub itself is attractively bushy, well branched and broad.
According to Greek mythology, Leda, wife of Tyndareus, King of Sparta, laid two eggs after being seduced by Zeus in the form of a swan. From these eggs Helen of Troy, Clytemnestra and Castor and Pollux were born.
