Buddleja davidii 'Black Knight' is a deciduous, fast-growing shrub prized for its exceptionally dark flower colour and its value to pollinators. Growing up to 2 to 3 metres tall, it produces long, conical panicles of rich, dark purple flowers from July to September. The flowers are lightly fragrant and serve as a magnet for butterflies, bees, and other insects.
The foliage is grey-green and lance-shaped, forming a graceful backdrop to the dramatic flower clusters. This cultivar thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained, alkaline to neutral soil. Though drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from occasional watering during dry spells. In Belgium’s climate, it is reasonably hardy but may require pruning after severe frost. Each spring, it should be cut back hard to about 80 cm to encourage strong new growth and abundant flowering.
‘Black Knight’ is perfect for butterfly gardens, mixed shrub borders, or as a stand-alone feature. Its high nectar production makes it ecologically valuable and a favourite in wildlife-friendly planting schemes.
