Cardinal de Richelieu
Large shrub with medium-sized, fragrant, very double quartered flowers with a green button eye in the center. The colour varies from wine red to purple and the purple colour of grapes. The leaves are matte green and almost without prickles.

This rose is attributed to Jean Laffay 1840 but certainly to Louis Parmentier.
It is one of the darkest gallicas. When the flower buds show color, it looks as if they will bloom in pink, but as soon as the very double flowers open, the most beautiful nuances appear from wine red, dark purple to gray purple. The flowers have a scent of roses and pepper. The plant is compact and vigorous in growth, it has few prickles. Very good in the background in a border, as a hedge and cut rose.
