An old rose that still fits well in our contemporary gardens. It blooms in June-July and reblooms in September-October, after which large elongated rose hips appear. The large flowers are semi-double and cherry red. The shrub is bushy and compact with strong leaves. An eco rose: the flowers show their stamens that attract bees and form hips in the autumn. This 'Duchess of Portland' is the origin of the Portland roses, which are a small but valuable group of old roses. It is said to be a cross between a Gallica rose and a Damask rose from after 1750. It is named after the English Margaret Cavendish Bentinck, Duchess of Portland (1715 – 1785).
