Compact shrub, upright growing with good repeat flowering medium sized flowers. They are strongly rosette-shaped filled usually quartered with many small petals. Light pink edges with a slightly pinker centre.
Their scent is strong and sweet. They have very short peduncles (flower stems) and stand alone or in clusters of up to 5 flowers and repeat flowering regularly throughout the summer from June to October. The plant is well in the foliage that is strong and light green. Good in groups, as a solitary, between perennials, in a hedge and in a pot.
For many years the same rose has been sold, grown and exhibited under the names Marquise Boçella (1842) and Jacques Cartier (1868). It has been the subject of much discussion in the rose world. Both roses are said to be the same and it is assumed that they should best be classified as Portland rose, a group of smaller, compact repeat flowering old roses.
