The Rosa canina, also known as the dog rose, is a native wild rose that often occurs in Europe, Northwest Africa and West Asia. It is a shrub-like plant that is known for its graceful flowers and hips. The flowers are single with white to light pink flowers and appear fairly early in the season, namely late May and June. The leaves have 5 to 7 oval leaflets. The elongated rose hips are orange-red, hard, rich in vitamin C and appear from September on.
Because the flowers usually only bloom for one day and therefore quickly finish flowering, this rose is rarely used in gardens but rather as a hedge and along forest edges. It is an ecological rose that provides food and shelter for birds, insects and other animals.
The rose hips are used in tea, syrups and jam because of their high vitamin C content.
