Rosa gallica 'Versicolor' is a mutation of the Apothecary's rose Rosa gallica 'Officinalis' in which the pink flowers have white and light pink stripes. The fragrant flowers are semi-double and show their stamens. The beautiful striped flowers appear very abundantly in June-July. The growth is upright bushy and low to 1m. The branches are almost thornless, the leaves are mid-green. Good as a solitary, in a group or as a hedge. As a hedge, the plant is best pruned into shape in February. The round rose hips that appear in the autumn are decorative. This rose is also known as 'Rosa Mundi'.
The story goes that this rose was named after Rosamond, the mistress of King Henry II (1154-1189), but that is not correct. DNA research in Sweden by Pom [Swedish Plant Diversity Program] showed in 2021 that 'Officinalis' is genetically identical to 'Rosa Mundi'. 'Officinalis' only came into existence after the time of Thibaut IV, 13th century.
