This rose has its origins in the Low Countries around 1800 and is currently one of the most beloved old Gallica roses. Rightly so, because the almost single flowers have a beautiful deep velvety dark purple colour, almost black at the end of the petals. In the center, a bouquet of golden yellow stamens provides a brilliance and attraction.
With its high upright growth, 'La Belle Sultane' forms a bushy shrub. The dark green leaves sprout reddish when young. The plant is almost thornless but the branches are covered with bristly hairs.
Beautiful as a solitary or in a group. Round red hips appear in the fall.
According to historians, the name: 'La Belle Sultane' would refer to the distant cousin of Empress Josephine, Aimée Dubucq de Rivery (1776-1817). This Creole lady of nobility is said to have been captured by pirates during a return trip to Martinique and incorporated into the harem of the Sultan of Istanbul.
